Winter 2011

One Caribbean please, hold the pirates

Freedman Sea Spirit route across the Caribbean

Please note:
This section, other than the first part about crossing to the Bahamas, has become fiction.

While we originally planned to pursue the itinerary below, we fell in love with the Bahamas shortly after arriving, and decided to spend the entire season there instead. Frankly, this took us by complete surprise, since we had spent a lot of time previously in the Caribbean, but never any time in the Bahamas. We had never warmed to the Caribbean at all, even though tons of other people really love it there. But in our view, the Bahamas is definitely not the Caribbean, geographically or culturally. We fell in love with it, and are pleased to have spent the last couple of months there.

We may pursue this itinerary in future seasons, or may instead cruise up the East Coast of the US, or perhaps something completely different. So, for now, it remains the one part of this web site that is fiction! I'm leaving it in here as a placeholder, or in case anyone else wants to see how we planned the route. -- Dan

Ft. Lauderdale to Golfito, Costa Rica, via

        - The Bahamas

        - The Cayman Islands,

        - San Andres Island (125NM East of Nicaragua)

        - The San Blas Islands

        - Transit of The Panama Canal

We intend to cast off from Ft. Lauderdale, Florida a few days after TrawlerFest, which is January 25 - 29 2011.

Transit to Bahamas

We will cross the Gulf Stream to the Bahamas, and spend a couple of weeks there. Dan’s parents will join for the first week. Our intention is to test everything on the boat, with it in mind that if something isn’t quite right, we’re not really a long way from home and all the suppliers we’ve used in Ft. Lauderdale.

Transit to Cayman Islands

Our first overnight passage will actually involve two overnights. It will occur when we leave Grand Inagua Island, transit the Windward Passage between Cuba and Haiti, and arrive in the Cayman Islands. We’ll spend a week or two in the Caymans, with a focus on snorkeling and scuba.

Transit to San Andres Island

After the Caymans, we’ll do another double overnighter to San Andres Island, where we will relax for a few days.

Transit to Panama, then to Golfito, Costa Rica

Then, it’s a single overnighter to the San Blas Islands, where we hope to get to know the Kuna Indians for a week or so.

After that, we intend to transit the Panama Canal and enter the Pacific, where we will wander up the coast to Golfito, Costa Rica. We may well do a land tour of the cloud forests in Costa Rica.

Possible Land Excursions

We are considering interspersing a trip to the Galapagos Islands, but if we do it, we will likely fly rather than take the boat. This is based on what we’ve read about how best to do the Galapagos.

Thereafter

After Golfito, we’d like to bring the boat up to Vancouver, BC, but that’s another story.
